Thermography (Infrared Imaging)
The use of infrared
imaging has been around for quite some time. Initially, it was
developed for use by the military and often coined "Night
Vision". It has also been used extensively in commercial
applications such as pipeline and electrical distribution
applications. Only recently has this technology been
incorporated into the home inspection and energy auditing
industry. This is due largely to the reduction in cost of
infrared cameras and the significant benefits it offers in
inspections.
Infrared imaging works
by being able to detect differences in the heat given off by
materials. It then displays these heat differences as colors
such as red, blue, yellow, orange, etc.. . These heat
"signatures" or colors allow for the determination
very important properties with regard to the areas being
scanned by enabling us to determine the differences in
temperatures in those areas. The cameras we use today are so
sensitive that they give the appearance of being able to "see
through walls".
The kinds of things
that can be detected with imaging include; areas where
moisture is present, lack of insulation in walls, hot wires,
receptacles, switches and circuit breakers, and air leaks in
and around doors, windows, baseboards and AC
equipment.
Real Horizons is aware
of the importance of utilizing this technology in home
inspections and includes thermogarapy in all of our inspection
services. Below is a collection of thermographic images that
were obtained from various inspections we
performed.
